A large group of friends is never a bad thing, but it's more important to have a group of close friends. It really isn't that important how big or small the number of friends you have is.
What is important, is that you can rely on the ones you consider friends. And the other way around being just as important.
Some say, you can measure a persons character, by the people he surrounds himself with. I couldn't agree more. My friends are a diverse group of people, but they all have the same qualities I seek in a person. And I think it's the same with everyone. So if you look at the people someone hangs around with, you can often see what that person is like. Or at least, what kind of qualities he believes are important, and almost certainly tries to uphold himself.
Anyway, I think if you don't have any close friends, you might as well have a large group of casual friends. And even with a select group of close friends, what would be wrong if it where a large group? Or a small group of close friends, and a larger group of casual friends besides that? As long as they are there for you, when you need them, and you are there for them. Anything else is unimportant.
Having friends is more important than anything else in this world. Those are the people that give meaning to your life, an support you when you need it. Or just make you feel good about yourself, by knowing you are loved. You could say, so does your family. But that's not entirely true, you're stuck on those anyway. It is more meaningful when people choose to be with you. Not just because you're in the same bloodline.
