Reflections: America's obsession with celebrities

Paris Hilton and The Environment

Say what?

OK well I guess I can take comfort in the fact that Paris Hilton's picture dominated the 21st page of "24" rather than the 1st, but happy be the day when her face doesn't make it on to any page of any newspaper or any electronic transmission whatsoever.

Page 21. Queen of the scene (Paris Hilton)

U-G-H! Since when do these two topics even deserve to be in the same vicinity of each other? I wonder if U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon would be insulted or thrilled to see his face along with his cause to "curb climate-warming emissions", appear across from Paris's breaking news story of ... well nothing to be perfectly honest. Let's see...I think the gist of it was that Paris Hilton encourages the paparazzi; "(Paris Hilton) would be nothing without us (paparazzi), and she knows it." Surprise surprise, tell me something I don't know. Can you believe she gets paid $20,000 to $200,000 dollars just to make a 20 minute appearance at a club!? That's outrageous!

OK, so I lied, the two stories are some what connected. There is a quote from Al Gore at the end of the article. "We have to overcome the paralysis that has prevented us from acting and focus clearly and unblinkingly on this world crisis, rather than spending time on Anna Nicole Smith and O.J. Simpson and Paris Hilton.

Well said Al! Well said.

I had somewhat of an epiphany last night. I was reading (gasp) "Us" magazine. OK. I admit that sometimes I buy it if I want completely mindless entertainment. I think I only have about 3 in total lying around my house, and I've been living in my current residence for almost a year, in case you question the true meaning of "sometimes".

But, I digress. As I was flipping through the splashy pictures, thoroughly caught up in the questions posed about Kiera Knightly's weight, or lack of, and Britney Spear's latest crazy rampage. Angelina is too skinny. Lindsay is being released from rehab. America Ferrera is losing weight. Kate Moss wore a bad outfit. Britney Spears had bad hair, what were here stylists thinking? What was she thinking? My god! How could this be? All of this random useless information was building up in my head until I felt like there were a million ping pong balls knocking off the walls of my brain. I suddenly laughed out loud. My boyfriend gave me a weird look, but I wasn't sure if I could explain what exactly I was laughing at.

How is it that the world has
