Americans should be able to import and purchase safe and affordable prescription drugs from other nations. Drug companies in the United States have long held a monopoly on drug sales. Prices for prescription drugs in America are exorbitantly high and controlled by our drug industry. The promises made by politicians that prescription drug prices would be lower after the new Medicare supplement went into effect were never realized by many senior citizens. The loophole in the new Medicare supplement disallowing the negotiation of drug prices for Medicare recipients has been the cause of some Medicare recipients to actually pay more for their prescription drugs.

Americans,especially the elderly are negatively effected by the current policies of the United States government concerning the importation of safe and affordable prescription drugs from other developed countries like the United Kingdom,Germany and even Japan.

The government has passed laws to appease drug company lobbyists who in turn, have placed the purchase of prescription drugs beyond the financial reach of the most vulnerable members of our society. The elderly,disabled and the working poor of our nation are being denied the opportunity to choose to purchase less expensive prescription drugs from other countries.

Many other developed countries have universal health care and their governments subsidize prescription drugs making them much more affordable. The citizens of many European countries do not have to worry about making choices like whether to buy their prescription drugs or groceries. It unfortunate that the United States government does not allow the importation of safe and affordable drugs so that citizens of our country can have those same benefits.
