When telling your boss bad news always remember that most mistakes are not career ending or beyond repair. The golden rule is to report the news before the boss finds out himself or from a co-worker or customer.
Follow the below advice when communicating with your employer:
1. Don't panic and approach your boss before you take time to evaluate the situation and severity of the news. Always pause and access the situation.
2. Come up with several ideas for re-mediating the situation or controlling the fallout from the bad news.
3. Once you complete the above steps acknowledge the error or news if its your fault.
4. Report the news concisely. Present your positive suggested solutions.
5. Promise to cooperate and work expeditiously to fix the problem.
6. Always thank the boss for his understanding and advice when you conclude the conversation and acknowledge his right to be angry.
From a body language perspective always remember to make immediate eye contact but don't stare. If the boss is seated at his desk stand for a moment or two. This puts you in a power position. Always keep your hands away from your face and gesture with an open palms. Keep you hands visible at all times.
Also, remember that most people like to forgive rather then place blame.
