Keeping tiny dogs warm in cold weather

Keeping your pet warm during the winter months is important for animals of all sizes but it is particularly important for small dogs. Just as you would gear yourself, your children, or elderly family members up for staying warm and dry for the winter, you need to do the same for your small dog. After all, aren't they a member of the family too?

If you cannot keep your dog indoors all of the time during the winter months, you need to make sure that a shelter is provided outside for the dog. An elevated shelter is preferred with a door that will protect the dog from the wind and the weather. The shelter should have clean, dry bedding materials in it. The shelter should also be big enough for the dog to move around but small enough for the dog to be able to retain some of its body heat within. Because a small dog becomes colder much more easily, having to keep them outside is really not something that is preferred and will hopefully only be done as a last resort.

For indoor dogs, make sure that it has a warm sleeping area away from drafts. Mine are spoiled and actually sleep in my bed with me. If you aren't this adventurous, there are many stores that sell inexpensive small dog beds. If your dog will tolerate it, a receiving blanket normally used for babies is a nice addition to cover it up with at night. Smaller dogs, especially puppies, tend to like the softness of the blanket and gives them an extra sense of security.

When taking your dog out for walks, make sure that you kept the hair around the paw pads trimmed. Less hair keeps off the ice and snow which can ball up between footpads and create uncomfortable walking conditions for the dog. Also make sure you inspect their paws for small cuts or cracks. Do not let the dog walk on ice especially if it has a cut or cracked paw as this will be very painful for the dog. Dog boots can be a good investment in making sure that the dog's paws are staying warm and dry. A dog can develop frostbite just as a human can. A dog that continually lifts individual legs off the ground during a walk may be feeling the effects of frostbite. If you suspect this is the problem, make sure you consult your vet immediately.

You need to also make sure that you are providing the proper type and amount of food. Also make sure the dog has access to fresh, unfrozen water. Having the right amount of food, the right type of food, and fresh water will help your dog maintain its health.

Lastly, for indoor and outdoor use, you may want to invest in dog sweaters or dog coats. Like a human, dogs will shake when they are cold. Smaller dogs, especially shorter haired smaller dogs, need some extra protection during the winter months. You need to be particularly sensitive to this if you have an older dog or a puppy as they, like humans in those categories, are more susceptible to becoming sick.

Your small dog is a wonderful addition to your family. So, like family, you need to make sure you are taking good care of it during the winter months. By following the suggestions listed above, you can make sure your dog experiences the winter months being warm, comfortable, dry and healthy.
