In his First Inaugural Address, FDR stated "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself." The setting was the Great Depression, and these words echoed with a new found optimism, and rang out words of encouragement for all.
So isn't it fear that grips us ever so tightly, and prevents us from doing things outside our comfort zone. We are taught to be orderly and conforming by our educational systems and work culture. Stand in line, ask permission to go to the bathroom, raise your hand to ask questions, get there three minutes early - not three minutes late, and the list goes on. How dare we buck tradition?
We are told that if it could have been done differently, somebody else would have already done it. How's that for discounting original thoughts and brainstorming. Those who go against the grain of the tried and true ways of doing things are chastised to submissiveness.
Is it any wonder that we panic at the thought of stepping out of the norm? The thought of doing something new sends fear rushing through our veins.
What if, instead, we just threw caution to the wind? Would we face such horrendous ridicule, exposing our inner-most insecurities, such that would send us frantically to seclusion? Alternatively, would we be labeled a genius?
Chances are we won't be labeled a genius, but our worst fears would only come true in an environment analogous to grammar school. That's not the environment an entrepreneur needs to be in. The best way to motivate yourself is to surround yourself with positive people, mentors, those who will build you up and not bring you down. If you make a mistake along the way, it's just merely a learning experience.
If you let fear constrain you, then your biggest obstacle is overcoming that fear, getting out of your own way. Whatever happens, happens. But it can't happen without action on your part. Just do it! Allow your mind to run free, think outside the box, and see where it may lead. Entrepreneurs are born every day. Be one!
