There are a number of incredibly easy ways to connect two computers together, but the easiest by far is to run one simple cable between the two computers and have a peer-to-peer network.
The most basic cable to use is a crossover Fast Ethernet Category 5e, this can be found at most Walmarts and most definitely at electronics department stores. The key word to look for on the cable is "crossover."
The cable can then be attached to the backs of the the two computers in the Fast Ethernet jack. (This is the jack that looks like a phone cable slot and will fit your cable.)
The next several steps must be done on both computers.
In Windows 98 and above you go to "My Computer" and the click on "My Network Connections."
Now you can right click the only icon there that should say something like; "My Network Places," or "LAN etc..." either way, right click and scroll down to properties. In the highlight the selection the says "TCP/IP" then click the properties tab.
Now you are able to configure you IP addresses. On the fist Computer for the IP address type 192.168.1.1, and for the second computer type 192.168.1.2. Then for the subnet mask for both computers you need to type 255.255.255.0.
Now click apply and then close the properties window and your two computers are now successfully connected.
