*My Space Music Marketing Guidelines-The Page*
1) Looks matter. Sorry but they do. Especially on My Space and Facebook. Put a sexy picture of yourself and/or your band (whichever is most attractive) on you're My Space home and new friends will flock. Some of them will love your tunes and some of them will just want to be your favorite groupie. Either way, accept their friend request graciously and watch as their entire network catches on. At the very least, you'll get a few new people to recognize your band name. You know what the mysterious "they" say about publicity right? "There's no such thing as bad".
2) If you absolutely must have your page open with one of your uploaded song tracks, by all means would you please be considerate enough to ease us into it? In other words, anything loud, thrashy or heavy on the drums is cacophonous to my ears and therefore also my preferably peaceful web browsing atmosphere, which means that I'm probably going to close the window as soon as physically possible before I get too ADD-like and angsty. Even if the first pic I see is indeed a hot one.
*My Space Music Marketing Guidelines-Friend Requests*
You should definitely solicit your music to semi-random My Space strangers but you should go about doing so in a smart and strategic way. Note: the seemingly popular and oh so common friend request way according to most of the bands on My Space is NOT the smart and strategic way, bear this in mind. Here's how you should do it instead:
Start by targeting people in your social vicinity. It's a real great idea to start with people who are interested in your style of music to begin with. You can filter that out by browsing for profiles who list band names who sound similar to yours.
Don't be like all the other lazy loser bands who mass mail out their friend requests or solicitous messages to hundreds of people at a time, most likely with some kind of quick and easy spamming program. This is no way to introduce yourself. Instead, take the extra time to at least copy and paste a more personal and humble sounding message to a bunch of people individually. Make it brief, charming and right to the point with a hint of your personality exposed. Use the words "please" and "thank you" and in your own words ask them to add you only after listening to and enjoying your posted tunes. This alternative is honest, fair and irresistibly sincere.
