It is not the job of a school to nurture a child, rather it is their purpose to first provide a good education and second to instill a good work ethic. Children, while in need of nurturing, must understand from the beginning that school is a preparation for the workforce, a doorway to all of their successful adult endeavors, and therefore should be treated as such.

Parents are the ones who should provide the nurturing and the guidance for their children, teaching them the basics of how to interact with peers, listen to and respect teachers, and be ready to take in the knowledge that they will be given.

While I think that it is counterproductive for schools to be too rigorous, in essence making children hate their time there, I do think that a certain degree of strictness (that our current school system mostly lacks) should be adhered to in order to ensure the success of a larger percentage of students. There should be no reason why ANY child graduates elementary school without knowing how to read, much less high school! I believe that this lack of "learning" is directly associated to the lack of strictness in our schools today.

It has been said "Spare the Rod and Spoil the Child", and I believe that when it comes to the school system, this is somewhat true. I'm not talking physical punishments or violence of any sort, but I do believe that punishments for bad behavior should be more severe, more children should be held back if they are not adequately testing at their grade level and teachers should have more authority on what can and cannot be done in the classroom.
