A few years ago when I was living in Singapore, a group of predominantly European breastfeeding mothers announced in the newspapers and television that they were going to publicly breastfeed in a cafe. They advocated that breastfeeding is natural and it was their right and they were not going to be discreet.

What did this public announcement achieve? Some dirty old men and young boys lingered in the cafe ogling at the bare breasts. Of course, one could debate this the trouble lies with the men and that is their problem. What if these men and boys get aroused and molest or even rape some innocent women or young girl.

The breasts should be kept private. Instead of breastfeeding in public, these women should advocate for all malls to provide mothers and babies room where they can breastfeed in comfort. Many malls already provide such facilities and should be patronized. Women could write to malls not providing such facilities to persuade them to establish them. If not, they will vote with their feet.

Not everyone is comfortable with the breast exposed, men and women alike. Their opinion should be respected. If a breastfeeding woman needs to go out with a baby, she can always pump her milk and bring a bottle. These days, there are special chill bags to keep the milk fresh and cool.
