Negotiating tips for buying a used car

-
In 1986 I saw a 1982 Rolls Royce Silver Spur in the Hemmings Motor News for $75,000. with just under 2,800 miles on it. It was in new jersey, and being only about three hours away, I took a ride with a friend of mine to see why this car was so cheap, and brought several Cashiers checks with us. Well when we got there ,the owner pulled it out from his twelve car garage and my jaw hit the ground. It was just like brand new,but was a three tone paint job, with dark forest green on the bottom, then a little lighter green in the middle, with a little lighter green roof, which all flowed perfectly together, and looked beautiful, all of the paint was a very heavy metallic that shined like a Emerald Green Sun,and looked like it belonged in a museum, with velvet ropes around it. I tried not to get too exited so I laughed with my friend in front of the owner. I could see after that, that he dropped his guard, and wasn't bragging as much. He told me the story where he got the car. It came from the Indian Guru "Bhagwan Rashneesh" who was a great con artist that came over from India, and had bought a 64,000 acre ranch in Antelope Oregon. In 1981 the town was having plenty of trouble with him,for they said he was trying to poison the water, to get rid of the people and change the name of the town, which he did. On his ranch he had bought eighty, yes 80 Rolls Royces and had them all painted different colors, some with murals all over them. As all his sorted deeds finally came to light, sex, drugs, and rock and roll, and the authorities were about to come down on him,he tried to make a run for it to North Carolina and was arrested. After finding out how much money he had swindled from so many people, the courts took all his cars and auctioned them off..... Back to the buying of the triple green one...I told him ,what a shame,I came all the way here with the money, and end up seeing a cartoon car. Well he seemed very disappointed to say the least,so I told him I would give him an offer of $40,000. He said no,but not as quickly as I thought he would,so I stayed there at 40 for a while, and then we went back and forth and finally settled at $50,000. My friend was so happy ,he almost fell down. We put a tag on it, and I drove that Work of Art home with a big smile on my face. We keep telling each other as we changed drivers,to look "NONCHALANT" As people would be following us for miles,as we would look at each other and crack up laughing. My friend who put up the money told me to keep it out on long Island, because he lived in the City and he felt it would be safer with me. That next year we put about 14,000 miles on it,and weren't trying to sell it because my friend found a new respect just owning that great ride. Well as luck would have it,when we finally decided to sell it, the October 1987 Stock Market crash happened, and the last thing anyone wanted to talk about, was buying a Rolls Royce! I had it in the New York Times for Fifty thousand and got one phone call from the Boston area, and we went back and forth, and he flew into Islip Air Port with his Pilot, and his helicopter and handed me $37,000.cash,Thanked me, and drove away. My friend handed me $5,000. and said thank you,and thats the story.....BTW Some of those cars today are bringing hundreds of thousands of dollars today at auction!...P.S.(Look up the Bhagwan Rashneesh on google) Blessings to All
