How to repair burns in carpets

Most times burns in carpets are caused by either hot ash or sparks from Wood burning stove or fireplace. Depending on the type of carpet you have and the severity of the burns repair can be quite easy.

The best way to repair a burn of a larger size than an ash burn is to brush the fibers back from the burn and measure the area. Get you a piece of the remnants you saved or go to a closet or other out of the way place and cut a piece to fit the burned area. After you have your piece lay it over the burn and cut the carpet out to fit the new piece. Be careful not to cut the padding underneath. Now just place some hot glue down and lay the patch in place. Fluff the fibers and you are in business.

The easiest way I have found to repair smaller cigarette burns is to brush them out and take scissors and cut out the burned fibers. If it is burned deep and scorched, gather you some fibers from an inconspicuous place and again use some adhesive and place the fibers in this spot. Allow them to dry and fluff up nicely.

The important thing to remember when repairing carpet is to keep the repair as small as possible. If you have a stove or fireplace then install something to protect your carpet. Also, if cigarette or cigar burns are a problem, restrict smoking in these areas. And always remember to make sure your curling iron is secure and is not going to fall on the carpet. A little prevention goes a long way in repairing carpet burns.
