Best paints for window art

Acrylic paints, straight from the tube, are very effective window paints. Acrylic paint is essentially "plastic paint," and peels off glass quite easily. It can also be removed with soap and water - and it's nice to know it cleans up with soap and water, too.

For several years, after we bought our new home, I painted seasonal decorations on our front windows: Halloween, Christmas and Easter. The best paint I found to use was the student grade of Liquitex, called "Basics"...it's less expensive than the professional artist grade paint and comes in all the primary and secondary colors.

One Halloween I painted a huge scene: a haunted old house with a rickety fence in front, with black cats, big yellow moon, white ghosts and lots of orange pumpkins. I used acrylic paint - which mixes easily with a little water - and the colors were bright and bold. My window was a hit in the neighborhood and once Halloween was done, it was quite easy to clean.

We had no rain during Halloween that year so I decided to use acrylics to paint my Christmas scene, wondering how the paint would hold up in rain. I discovered that if you didn't touch the painted images while they were wet from the rain, they stayed put. Once the rain stopped and they could dry, they were fine. The nice point was, even though it was raining, my scene didn't "melt" down the glass and into the flower bed.

For projects like mirrors and even on the outside of glass vases (for temporary use) acrylic paints are a good choice.
