What people need to be educated about Lupus is that it's an autoimmune disease that can really mess up the body. No part of your body is immune to the affects of this disease. It can very much affect your skin, joints, heart, lungs, blood, kidneys, brain, and reproductive organs. It's also gives you chronic inflammatory pain as another affect of having Lupus.
How it also messes up your body is because it confuses your immune system. Your immune system will not be able to differentiate between foreign substances and the cells/tissues of your body. That is another devastating affect of being diagnosed with a disease such as Lupus. It's a very self-destructive disease as the antibodies attack the self. This is why one diagnosed with Lupus gets the feeling of inflammation, pain, and so forth. To some, Lupus will only affect a few organs and to others it will affect a lot more to the pint where it can be life-threatening.
The wife of one of my uncles currently has Lupus. It's unknown how long she has had this disease but it had very affected her in so many ways. The major affect Lupus did to her was mess up reproductive organs. As a result, it means that she cannot have children of her own. The only option would possibly be adoption. The second affect would be her joints. Several years ago, she accidentally fell and broke her hip. Due to the Lupus, the hip couldn't be fixed properly. As a result, she had to get hip replacement surgery.
I haven't seen my aunt since 2001. The last time that I saw her was late 2006 while I was up in Maryland for personal and business related stuff. As a result of the hip replacement surgery she is legally handicapped. But the hip replacement was a result of the Lupus affecting the immune system.
Unfortunately, there is no cure for Lupus. However it shouldn't stop you from enjoying life. Luckily, there are adjustments that can be made. On a plus side, it wouldn't require you to constantly see a doctor which saves you a lot of money. However, it may give you reason to want to have national health care that's available. But, that's still in the woodworks at the moment.
First thing is first: making sure that you really do have Lupus. If you do, find out what kind of Lupus that you are diagnosed with.
There is "chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus" (CCLE) which is a skin disorder. That one is mainly associated with the color of your skin.
There is "drug-induced lupus erythematosus"
