Reflection. Thought. That undeniable closeness that you feel to someone after you've traveled the road of undiscovered together. When you take an amazing road trip into the unknown, it changes you a little each time. Even if you don't realize it at first.
My friend's grandfather had just died, and our group of friends thought it would be a good opportunity for us to accompany my friend and her boyfriend to the funeral, for support, of course, but also to take their mind off of grieving.
We left around five o'clock. I was riding with all the guys. The girls had left earlier that afternoon.
It's always nice when someone else offers to drive. I like to gaze out the window at the scenery, listen to some thought-provoking music, and zone out. Think about life. About the possibilities of the adventure ahead.
Now there is something about a road trip that encourages you to be honest with yourself and other people. It's all about the present moment.
Just when I was thinking that my company was pretty cool, "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" came on, and all three males in the car knew every single word, and sung their testosterone hearts out. That's another great thing about road trips-finding random, silly, old songs on the radio that you would never otherwise admit that you knew all of the words to; but for some reason, on a road trip, it's perfectly acceptable.
We arrived early that morning, woke up late that afternoon, and managed to squeeze ourselves into the last Budweiser tour of the day. That night the guys took us to a local seafood hut. A couple of Margaritas and an oyster shot later, the snow flurries were coming down around us. It was the beginning of February-the perfect time for romance. We drove downtown, and gazed up at the beauty of the snow falling lightly around the arch, lying peacefully against the starry sky. It was a breathtaking image that I will never forget. Although we all had things to do the next day, we decided to end our short visit with lights, music, and drinks. It was at the club that I got to know my male acquaintance better, and eventually, we kissed.
We left St. Louis from the club, stopping for coffee on the way. The four of us took turns driving on the overnight drive home. My new friend and I were lucky to enough to be sitting in the backseat during the sunrise. We cuddled, talked, and fell in love. I stared out the window into God's promise of good things to come, and then fell asleep in a warm embrace.
