Why you should shred your mail and documents

If you have ever had your house broken into or your car stolen you know that sometimes you feel violated and it takes awhile to feel safe again. Some people even take the step of moving in an attempt to gain the sense of security that they now feel is lost.

Now imagine what it must feel like to find out your identity has been stolen. There is no escaping the fear and violation once someone else has not only taken your identity but has charged things using your name and possibly taken money from your bank accounts. This is why it is important to shred your important documents and your mail.

You may not even think it was possible or that it will happen to you but it can. There are people out there that will go through your garbage and your recycling to get any information that can help them gain access to your money and/or credit. Even something as simple as a pre-approved application from a credit card can be used to achieve this goal. It's a sad fact that this happens so you have to take the precautions to prevent it.

Here are some steps that you can take:

1)Always shred or cut your documents into the smallest pieces possible. You can get paper shredders that make confetti at most stores that sell office supplies. Some thieves are so determined that they may take the shredded papers and try to tape them together if it's in any way possible.
2)If you have a fireplace you can use the shredded papers or even just the crumpled documents as kindling or just burn them so there is no way for someone else to get them. It may seem like overkill but you can't be too safe.
3)Make sure you keep any important papers in a locked file or desk drawer.
4)If you see any suspicious activity on any accounts that you check into it as soon as possible so that if it's fraudulent it can be dealt with.

In most cases victims don't realize it's happened until it's become a huge problem. So just take the few extra steps to make sure that you do not end up having to deal with this problem.
