Methods doctors use to choose an antidepressant

Clinical Depression is defined as: A state of intense sadness, melancholia or despair that has advanced to the point of being disruptive to an individual's social functioning and or activities of daily living.

When someone is actually diagnosed as being, "clinically depressed" by a licensed psychiatrist, all necessary steps should have been taken to rule out depression before they begin dispensing medication. Steps such as: counseling, ways to help cope with problems that is causing the depression and solutions to avoiding them in the future. However, in most cases those diagnosed with clinical depression gets the best results when they are prescribed medication. Antidepressants should meet the needs of each individual, because depression is not a "one size fits all" diagnosis. For example; a certain drug may make the patient feel like they are on the top of the world, but yet; the side effects may make them feel crappy. That's why the patient and doctor have to work together until they find the proper medication with its side effects that can be tolerated.

Antidepressant medication works by correcting the imbalance of chemicals in the brain. These medicines are generally safe, work well but usually take several weeks before being effective. The main groups of antidepressants were listed as: selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)-Celexa and Lexapro, tricyclics (TCAs)-Adapin and Elavil, and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs)-Nardil and Parnate. All of these antidepressants are used to increase the level of serotonin, a substance that studies show influences our mood.

Anyone can take a depression test on-line as a first step to seeking the help that's needed. Further, anyone going to a depression site should seek immediate help. In some cases just a good counselor may be needed, in others more drastic steps may be the direction. Whatever the level, if there are any symptoms of depression seek help now and know, you are not alone. Yes, though there are many sufferers; it's good to know there are remarkable remedies available.
