An efficient manager can be a tough person and at the same time can be respected and liked. My decades of service in a service industry managing the staff taught me that unless one is tough he/she will not be getting the best even from the sincere staff .Next important thing is unless the manager is fully equipped to handle the work well he will not be respected.Once he is efficient and tough believe me ,people working with him will certainly like him and this makes him one up manager!Does it sound contradictory? how can one be tough as well liked?yes,it can be so as discussed below.
Many misunderstand that one has to be goody goody with the staff to be liked and to get their cooperation to run the organization successfully. In fact the team members look for guidance from a leader to lead them to reach the goals and targets. If the manager can prove himself as a leader and an achiever of the set goals -in spite of his toughness in dealing with the staff -they will certainly respect and like him for making the team proud.
No doubt the manager has to be benevolent , compassionate and earn their love. However great the manager may be as an administrator unless the staff like him he can not be an achiever. The manager has to certainly demonstrate his genuine concern for the staff and translate his feelings into meaningful welfare measures for them.
So an efficient tough manager achieves and makes his team proud. The team members earn respect from the peers and naturally love their boss/manager for the glory he brought. Unless he has got the respect and love of the staff he is not a great manager.
Of course it is easier to say or write all the above virtues but not impossible to posses over a period of time going through lot of experience.
