While I can understand the staunch feelings on both sides of this argument, I must state that I am against breast-feeding in a public area for multiple reasons. Breast-feeding, while natural, is not in any way socially acceptable behavior. It's exhibitionist behavior and creates an uncomfortable environment for others. Allowing a mother to breast-feed in a restaurant or shopping mall is likely to ward off other paying customers with as much right to enjoy life outside of home. It affects others and business and therefore, should not be allowed in public. However, there is certainly a way of resolving this issue in a reasonable manner.
Breast milk is highly-recommended amongst doctors and claims have been made that it is the best for a newborn. I don't believe that an act should be quickly tossed simply because the obvious answer creates an uncomfortable environment. To expect these women to utilize a public restroom during this feeding time is insensitive and unnecessary. Public restrooms are simply not cleanly or safe for such a need.
I believe the best resolution to end public breast-feeding, but allow for women to be comfortable exploring life outside of their homes during this time in their life is if Congress were to pass a bill calling for public places to create breast-feeding areas for mothers to retire to when nature or baby calls. It would help if the government were to implement a law requiring such an area be designed in any public restaurant, business, or store that offers restrooms to their patrons as well.
