If you are a manager that leads by example the answer would be,"YES"! It is important to have people around you that are positive towards you and themselves. If they like you, that is a feather in your hat. If you let a person know up front that you can be a friend or their worst enemy, respect will follow. Being kept in the loop is important for good relations with employees. Your people skills will show them you are easy to talk to and let them know the job has to be done.
It is true you cannot please everyone. When problems arise, it is better to have people that like you enough to share ideas to make things better. If an employee does not like you, it makes things more difficult in trouble shooting problems. They will be hesitant about sharing information that hinders the company as a whole. Team members are only as good as their managers. If you confront them with positive ideas, they will like you more because they feel they have a say and a part to the success of solving the problem.
Team players look out for one another. Being a manager you need less abrasive tactics to get the problem solved, and not create new ones. Your open minded policy will work for some but not with all employees. If you want to have a work force that is determined to excel, you have to have the respect and likability for people to go above and beyond.
You have the ability to use people skills towards people that do not like you. Bringing them into the fold of the team slowly to see how they perform with other team members can be beneficial to all involved. If the one that dislikes you is coached on how things have to be done, it will be better for you in the long run to gain their trust this way.
Trust is the key! If an employee does not trust you, the job as manager will be a burden to you every day. No one wants people that work against them in the work place. It waste a lot of time and money if your people do not like you or do not trust you.
Working towards common goals should be every one's perspective in the work place. There will be problems and distractions with employees. There is no way of eluding problems, there are only wise and deliberate decisions that help your employee to become better at their jobs. This will only happen if the employee respects your position and trust you and your decision making abilities.
Happy employee's seem to make a job much easier. If they like you, that is a plus. Still most employee's have a problem with authority figures. The job of winning them over to make them productive employee's will take time. There are no guaranteed ways of getting employee's to like you. You just have to build the foundation on trust.
