It is so diverse from its food, to choice of shopping, entertainment right through to the people who live there. You just have to be a little savvy and know the choices.
NY is expensive for a room so shop around. You can save by arriving off season but whenever you reserve, be prepared to add on a hefty room tax of 13.375%.
The greatest city in the world is the easiest city to get around with their subway and bus system. It is by far the best in the world as it doesn't sleep at night. If you want fast, take the subway but remember by bus you are seeing the same sites as any tour bus for a significant savings. The daily MetroCard will cost: $7 a day and it is good for unlimited subway and local bus rides for that day until 3AM. A 7-Day Unlimited Ride MetroCard costs $24, which is a savings of $25. www.mta.com
Want to cruise and see the skyline but feel that the expense is too steep? Head downtown to the Staten Island Ferry. The cost is free. Can't ask better than that. www.siferry.com
Back on land, stop by South Street Seaport for a cappuccino and watch the action on the East River. The seaport,a renovated American landmark, is right on the waterfront. You have wonderful views of three bridges including the Brooklyn and assorted shops, restaurants and street performers. www.southstreetseaport.com/
While at the Seaport, perhaps a Broadway show is on your mind. You can obtain tickets from the Theater Development Fund for that night's performance for up to 50% off. You can also purchase a matinee the day before a scheduled presentation. This one has shorter lines and offers discounts to the same shows as the line in Times Square. www.tdf.org
Mulberry Street is a great place to eat, stroll, and eat again. Located in Little Italy, you can discover endless good and affordable restaurants, strong espresso and top it off with first rate cannolis
