I believe in equality in the workplace, but I think it's unfair that some one gets a job over you because of their race. If another person gets a job over you because they're more qualified, that's fine, they deserve it. But race is not a qualification, it is an appearance, a connection to a geographical location; it is not a skill, it has no pertinence to the job what so ever. So when I see somebody who doesn't have as good qualifications as me, and gets the job because of their race, it pisses me off. In fact, it's more racist. You're hiring some one due to a stereotype and not who they are as a person. If I was a so-called minority and I found out I was hired not for my skills but for my race, it would insult me and make me feel ill.
Affirmative action was made to force companies to hire people they were excluding before. Ok, I understand that, no one should be denied because of their skin tone, that makes sense. But by the same logic, then you shouldn't hire some one because of their skin tone; it's just as bad. "Ok, we need three blacks, two Mexicans, a couple of Asians, oh, and a Jew." Have you ever seen an ad where they purposely try to put every race to try to show they care about you. They don't care about you, they just want to appeal to your identity so you buy their product. And the more people they appeal to, the more money they make.
It would be nice if nobody saw color, but that won't happen until we end contemporary segregation, class segregation, unequal opportunities and unequal education. In some ways we need affirmative action to make sure certain people aren't left out, and I agree with that, but...I guess I'm just pissed off at the system, that's all.
We need to find a way to not exclude anyone and at the same time not hire some one based on their race. That "way" is? I have no idea. But I'm sure in the near future I'll come up with something.
