Visiting New York City on a modest budget

New York City is one of the greatest cities in the world. What most people have come to realize is that great cities can sometimes hurt you more financially then you had planned. Even on a modest budget New York City can be a great place to vacation.

Housing is one of the largest expenses on any trip, especially when heading to the Big Apple. While it may not be as convenient, consider spending your nights on the outskirts of town or outside of it all together. The farther from the downtown core you are willing to travel, the more money you will have to spend during your time there. As long as there is public transit near your hotel, there will be a quick and easy way in to the city.

Many vacationers forget about costs such as parking. It may be free to park at your hotel, but what happens when you want to explore other areas? The subway system and the bus routes are cheap ways to move about the city without concerning yourself over unexpected charges. If you plan to use the public transit system frequently then you can also purchase a day pass for a fraction of the cost.

With so much to see and do, it does not take long before your costs start to spiral out of control. Planning ahead is the best way to keep yourself on track. Map ougt what you want to see and how you hope to experience it and budget that in to your trip costs. You can plan to see the Empire State Building but may choose to skip the trip to the top of the tower.

Street venders will line the sidewalks selling items which appeal to many tourists. If you feel comfortable then remember that all prices with street vendors are negotiable. The sticker may read $40 for the purse you had always wanted, but if you offer $30 then they may be willing to sell it cheaper.

There are many other ways to save your hard earned money but still enjoy your time in New York City. Have extra budgeted for those unexpected costs and your visit will be more memorable and more stress free.
