Poetry: Confusion

She stands in a maze
looking this way and that
She tries the first way
but is confronted by a hedge wall
So she turns the other way
But yet again, a hedge stands tall.

It stands like a statue
arms crossed, sneering down
at her hopeless attempts
to swim, not drown.

The walls around her rise higher
They reach for the sun
The light starts to fade,
as her hope has begun
To drift further away
This maze is no fun.
Still she can't find her way
she should never have come.

She just wanted to know
what it would have felt like
If she found the treasure
in the heart of the chest.

The treasure's been found
by another
so they say
So go on home,
find another
no need for you to stay.

But all treasures are different
She wanted that gem to be hers
It fit the space in her necklace,
Why couldn't she get there first?

The light has now faded
Her chance has long gone,
She's never felt so jaded
As if the sun had never shone.

Eventually, she manages
to find a way back home.
Her world is one of strangers,
She's forever lost.
Forever alone.
