SONNET #39
In this world of plastic, concrete and glass,
It's hard to find something of lasting worth.
Things built quickly and torn down just as fast,
Their debris buried in the shifting earth.
In the midst of towering skyscrapers,
In the maze of asphalt roads and sidewalks,
The truth of nature always reappears.
Through cracks and crevasses in concrete, stalks
Of green grass and weeds will push their way through.
Growing upward towards the sun, unmindful
That progress would much prefer to subdue
The fact that nature is more powerful.
When man tries to put nature behind walls,
He will only hasten his own downfall.
