In our modern world, the news is everywhere. On TV, radio and the internet it is both fast and easy to stay informed about what's happening around the world. So, why read the newspaper?
The answer to that is simple. It's just like the difference between going to the theater and reading a book; the book is almost always better.
Newspapers are fuller and more detailed than the short media presentation. There are more articles and more sections to choose from, and it is you, not some TV producer, that gets to choose. Furthermore, if you pick a local newspaper, it will have more information of a personal nature to you and your community.
The problem with the paper is the enormity of the information it contains. In the world that we live in today, most people don't have the time or the patience to sift through that mountain of news.
But the time crunch does not have to deter you from the riches of your daily paper. Most newspaper editors are aware of the difficulty of getting through all of the information that they present, so newspapers are purposely formatted in a way to help you get through them with ease, if you know how to properly navigate their pages.
To properly enjoy the newspaper, the first step is to decide what information you want and to find the paper that delivers the news in accordance with your expectations. For example, if your main concern is to stay on top of current world events, you might want a big city paper like The New York Times. But if you want to know what is going on with your city council or what events are planned in your town, then you probably want the newspaper that is printed in the city in which you live. Try out a couple of papers for a couple of days to see which one provides the information you want in a writing style that is pleasing to you.
Once you have chosen your favorite paper, the next step is to decide which sections you would like to read. Do you want all of the news, or are you more interested in events in a particular field? You can choose world or local news, local events, classified, social announcements like wedding and death notices, or a host of other information. So the first step to the quick read is know what you would like to know.
Once you have made a decision about which sections to read, the rest is easy. Newspaper articles are usually written in a tiered style. The headlines for each article contain a very brief summation of what the article is about. The first paragraph or two should contain the barebones of the story, and the more in-depth detail will follow.
So, after you have chosen the sections you want to read, the next step is to look through the headlines in that section. That will give you an overview of everything that's going on in your world. As you sort through the blurbs, you should stop and read the first paragraph of any story that you feel you need to know more about. Then you can choose whether you have enough information, or whether you want to know everything that is available on the subject that piques your interest.
As you go through the paper in this manner, you will find that it's really a quick read. Yet you have the advantage over the other media in that you have a lot more control over what news you choose to make your own.
I hope this information is useful to you in you quest to stay on top of current events. Enjoy your paper. It was written for you!
