Is the outlaw description of bikers justified?

by Milo

We often look at culture as something that is refined and that it exists for pleasure, usually for the upper class, and usually at a price. However, culture is, in fact, open to interpretation and can mean a whole variety of things. To me, culture is a lifestyle, a way of life and all that goes with it. Culture varies with the individual personalities of those who live within a cultural society. This article will deal with one section of society that is often swept under the carpet, a sub culture that is usually associated with unlawful activities, and one which goes against the grain of most people's scruples. I speak of the "Outlaw" motorcycle club sub culture.

Most members of society would consider themselves good people. They don't commit crimes, they generally dress well, have families, some even go to church on Sunday. They work during the week, pay their taxes, and respect the law in general. Have you ever been in city traffic, when a "biker" looms up at the lights, and happens to pull up next to you ? What is your reaction ? Usually you make sure that the widows are wound up, you avoid making eye contact and hope that the kids (in the back seat) aren't pulling faces at him ! You almost sweat, waiting for that damn traffic light to turn green, so you can be free of that despicable animal on that loud machine. You see a heavily tattooed, dirty, drug taking, unemployed, oxygen thieving, criminally minded burden on society, on an unsafe, loud, badly modified motorcycle. Now my question is: Why ? Why do you presume that that human being makes that impression upon you, and many others ?

I have a theory, and I strongly believe that many, men in particular, are simply jealous ! Yes, that's right, JEALOUS ! Why, do I hear you ask ! You are jealous because, that's what you want to be ! And let's face it, who doesn't ? Who hasn't ever thought of cruising out in the country, on a wild looking piece of machinery, that you've modified to become your own individual motorcycle, with the wind in your face and hair. WHO hasn't thought of having their own body modified, by getting some great tattoos, which you, yourself have designed, and make you an individual amongst the rest of the sheep in society.

We are quick to label others we don't fully understand as "Outlaws" or some other derogatory term. Yes, there are those who are involved in illegal dealings, but how many criminals dress in suits and drive nice cars, and look the same as Joe Average ?
Most "Outlaw" bikers have families, work hard and pay taxes, heck, and most of 'em are some of the most patriotic people I've ever met. Most bikers are either returned servicemen or have served in the military in some form or another. They hold friendship and mate-ship dear, their dedication and support for their brothers is second to none, except for that found amongst the military. They're not afraid to speak what's on their mind. You always know where you stand with a biker, and you always know what he thinks...he's not afraid of offending, he'll tell it like it is, period !

I've been associating with "Outlaw" bikers for well over 20 years now, and some of my best friends hail from that background. There is no-one else I'd rather depend my life upon that one of my "outlaw" buddies. They're up-front and real, unlike some of my other "normal" acquaintances from society, who gossip and would rather save their own skin when life get a bit rough.

Well, that's about it, just some food for thought. I hope to encourage others to look at people differently and not just judge them because they look different.
