No one can tell you what video game is right for you, but there are certain guidelines and things to consider when making your choice. Finding that really special game which you love and will play for years to come is a difficult task, and in the end it's all about trial and error, but here are 6 of the most important things to keep in mind. Follow the below points and you are one step closer to finding the video game that is right for you.
1. Platform
The first thing to consider is probably one of the easiest: on what platform do you intend to play? While the most common include the PC and various game consoles such as the Xbox 360 or Playstation 2 and 3, there are smaller handheld devices and a variety of consoles featuring different available games.
Deciding the platform usually isn't that hard as you probably go for what you have at hand in your own home. However, if you have several, this is something worth thinking about.
2. Genre
Next up you should decide the genre you're interested in. If you're looking for intense action, FPS' (First Person Shooters) are often a great choice. These work best for PC but most consoles have them as well. Call of Duty 3 for the Playstation 3 is a great example, or Medal of Honor Airborne for PC.
If you prefer good stories, character development and open worlds to explore, the RPG (Role Playing Game) genre is your ideal choice. A popular game of this genre at the moment is The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion which is available on several platforms.
Additionally, the RPG genre can be taken one step further through MMORPG's (Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games). Such games, for example the massive World of Warcraft, are played with and against thousands of fellow players over the Internet.
Strategy is another genre worth considering. Strategy games often involve the building of a city or an empire, the leading of an army through war and various political choices. Examples include World in Conflict and Sid Meier's Civilization series.
The list goes on, but other genre examples include sports, simulators, and so on. Do some research and choose what you find interesting.
3. Solo or multiplayer?
Worth considering, also when choosing the genre, is why you want to play the game. Are you interested in a gripping story in solo mode? Or do you want to socialize online? Do you want long lasting entertainment or just something simple to occasionally pass time with?
