for aquariums, as many other stands or decretive furnishings are inferior and are unable to support the aquarium being held. The use of poor footing will often lead to dire consequences and will commonly include cracking, warping, leaking, splitting and in the worst case scenario, burst seems.
Once the aquarium is in position, it is time to begin setting it up. First off, the substrate should be placed in the bottom of the tank. However, it is always a good idea to wash this carefully, irrespective of where it was obtained. Then, once the substrate has been smoothed out to ensure that none of the glass bottom is showing, it is time to start filling the aquarium with water. Once full, a decorticating agent and conditioner should be used. Artificial bacteria is another good product which can be used in conjunction when first setting up the aquarium. This will aid the natural production of bacteria and help cycle the tank. With the heater set to the correct temperature, this can be added, along with the air pump and filtration system.
Essentially, it is always a good idea to let any tank cycle for at least a couple of days before introducing the fish. At which point, fish should be introduced slowly, allowing the tank to go through the natural ammonia cycle. Should this be ignored and all the fish be introduced at the same time, there is a good chance the nutrient levels will rise severely. Such substances will quickly break down into harmful substances such as ammonia and once this occurs, the effects are often irreversible and will result in the death of your new pets.
This will be continued with the next article, which will have a closer look at choosing fish and how to ensure that you maintain a stable community.
