Freelance writing: Advice and encouragement

when you start, when you finish, what project you are able to work on next and when it is time for that all too important coffee break.

In taking just a glance at the large and often numerous difficulties faced by freelance writers new to the industry, it is not hard to see why so many often end up leaving and seeking to make their mark on the world, elsewhere. One of the main problems for such people is a general lack of experience and or industry knowledge. Also, patience and understanding that this is by no means a way to get rich quick, wont go astray and will often help keeping things in perspective. So, things are starting to look a little like a paradox now, are they not? However, within such things aside, there is light at the end of the tunnel and having been a freelance writer, academic writer, essayist, novelist and short story writer for some years now, I can assure you that I understand exactly how you feel because I have been there myself many times in the past and will more than likely make a few more trips to the enough is enough' school of thought. Nevertheless, I have decided to take this time to give you a few of my own personal tips and advice that has seen me through many-a-moneyless-days.

First of all it is important that a freelance writer has a good understanding of who they are as an individual. Now, I know this might sound somewhat clich, but I can assure you that it is one of the fundamental aspects of freelance writer and of course, writing in general. Essentially, this does not mean that you go out and get in touch with your inner child or what ever, it means that you have a solid understanding of your own personal strengths, weaknesses and are able to identify such things as well as methods by which they might be improved. Another important thing to remember, is to be aware of your own internal mechanisms. That is to say, look at the times when you eat, sleep, have other engagements and of course your emotional self and how this affects your writing. Through analysing such things, it is possible to built a time table or work schedule depending on when it is you think you are able to work at your full potential. Furthermore, it is also critical to note that distractions are often the death of many-a-freelancer and the same might also be said about a lack of sleep. Therefore, it is important that a good working environment is established and that you are well rested and it never hurts to ensure that you are in a relatively tranquil state of mind.
