Drywall finishers, a lost art form! We, as homeowners don't spend a lot of time thinking about drywall in general, unless of course you are in need of an expert to repair it. It doesn't look that hard to do, a little taping mud, a taping knife, and presto, it's fixed. Wrong! Unless you watch a professional (who actually knows what they're doing) you haven't a clue what a true art form it is. I have seen these guys do texture on walls that I didn't think could be done. Sometimes just using everyday household items and it turns out nicely.
I can safely say that it isn't a job that most of them love, but it is certainly one they can be proud of. When its done right, a house can turn out beautifully. Though it is just one stage of many in the building of a home, it is the one that gets noticed the most. If you have been unfortunate enough to get a lousy finisher, you can truly appreciate the quality of a good finisher.
While a majority of drywall finishers feel that this a job to fall back on when their "real" job falls through, I believe it is a lost art form. Though, I do appreciate why people aren't racing to become drywall finishers. As the wife, daughter, sister, niece, and cousin of drywall finishers, I know how it breaks down the body. I must admit, I have done enough of it in my life to muddle through a job (I fall under lousy finishers) to feel for myself the abuse to your body. Given that, I still in my heart believe it to be a worthwhile employment opportunity. True it is a very dirty job and while there may be plenty to do it, there aren't many who can do it well.
