Skiing the back country of Montana is not for the amateur. This is for the vacationer who craves more out of a vacation than just a little rest and relaxation.
Hellroaring Ski Adventures is one of the best places to check out for exploring the back country of Montana. They offer guided tours for snowboarding, alpine touring, and telemark skiing, and they don't limit their tours to experts or thrill seekers either. If you're looking for a place to start in the world of back country skiing, this is the place to start.
Hellroaring Ski Adventures takes skiers up to the summit of Mt. Jefferson, with an elevation of over 10,000 feet. The company also has lodging at the Nemesis Mountain Hut, but working your way to the Hut may be difficult. They recommend a splitboard or approach skis, as snowshoes usually don't work. The Nemesis Mountain Hut has 425 square feet of space, with bunks for 8 people, and with huge skylights and windows, there is tons of natural light which creates a warm and inviting space. You'll have something good to come back to after a day of exploring the back country of Montana. The Hut also has two wood stoves, propane lanterns, and gas lanterns for heating and food preparation. Smaller groups can use the Bunk tent, with room for 6 people. If the accommodations sound rough, prepare yourself because that's just the beginning.
The trip begins in West Yellowstone where you and your group will be picked up and driven to a snowmobile shuttle. The shuttle takes you on a scenic route over Redrock Pass to an otherwise unaccessible location, and up 3.5 miles to their Nemesis Mountain Hut at an elevation of 1,200 feet. The first night is spent relaxing with the guide, eating a meal prepared by the guide, and resting up for the long trip. The guide will show your group some of the local trails and safe routes, before heading out and leaving your group alone in the Hut. Be aware that you must have a designated trip leader who can provide documented proof of their avalanche and first aid training. Remember that skiing in the back country is 10 times more dangerous than a trip down the local slopes, and if someone in your group is hurt, there's not a first aid center right around the corner.
Most back country skiing trips include a shuttle, guide, meals, rescue equipment, lessons, and lodging on the mountain. With Hellroaring Ski Adventures, their price is determined by the amount of people on the trip. 1 person is $250, 2 people pay $200 each, 3 people pay $175 each, and so on. They also offer a big discount if you choose to bring your own food.
Skiing the back country of Montana can be a fun experience, but it is also extremely dangerous. There are chances to head off by yourself, but the best way, and the only way you should do it, is with a professional guide. Even if you have experience, it's a good idea to have someone who can keep track of your progress and know if you get lost.
