Horses have a way of slapping a big dose of humility at the most inconvenient times. While at the time, I failed to appreciate their lessons, I can look back, laugh or cry, and realize that every horse I have owned taught me a little something about life.
Magic, taught me that everyone needs a shoulder to cry on and someone to dry their tears. Alfie, that by stereotyping, you may have lost the best friend you've ever known. Star, proves that it's the size of your heart, not your body, that matters. Ginger, that sometimes a stern lecture is a better form of punishment. Misty, by pacing yourself, sometimes you win the race. Keppie Star, that personalities can clash and it's okay to go your separate ways. Tara, that life can be rough, but in the end, it will be okay. Tonnie, that babies are hard work and an endless source of enjoyment. Penny, you can be knocked down and trampled on, but they can't ever take away your dreams. The one who nearly broke my heart, Buster, showed me that even after years of abuse, it is never to late to trust and love someone. He came to me with whip welts under his hair, open sores, broken front teeth, and a tiredness in his eye that when bone deep. Yet every time he saw me he greeted me with an vigorous neigh and a thank you nicker after I fed him. Rest in peace, Buster! Brutus, my main man now, that a sense of humor is a must in life and that true beauty is felt not seen. Stormy, my soul mate, that life throws you curve balls and with support from your loved ones, you can hit it out of the park.
The most important lesson learned from all of my mentors? That love is sacrifice and worth every single moment on earth.
