Tips for safe motorcycling in the rain

Back when we were newly married and childless, it was a sad day in our house when we woke up to the sound of rain. Besides the fact that the den leaked in the corner, my husband know that he would have to gear up for a trek into the dangers of motorcycle driving in the rain. An '86 Honda Shadow 700 was his only ride to work.

His first defense, after proper motorcycle gear, was to cover it up with rain gear. Rain is already a distraction and safety hazard but improper gear can lead to more discomfort and distraction. Full body coverage is essential. A gortex rain coat and pants that cover to your boots are a must and can be purchased at any Motorcycle Dealership with apparel or Sports Gear Retail Shop. Reflective or Day-Glo material is also a must-have (truth be told he skipped this part, too cool or too stupid I can't decide which).

The second essential defense is to have good tread on your tires. Check tread regularly for depth and seek out bald spots. When your tires become too worm, spring for the new set - you will be grateful for the added safety should you have to drive in the rain.

A third defense involves no- brainer safety tips: SLOW DOWN! Drive with caution. Avoid sudden or jerky movements that often come with impatient driving. Do not drive immediately after it starts to rain. New rain means the roads are extra SLICK. Even a small delay will allow the oils and grease on the surface of the roads to wash aside. Visibility is essential, external rain drops and internal fog both pose a risk to the motorcycle driver when it rains. Defogger products can be purchased at motorcycle gear shops, apply them as need (before you get on the bike!. Drops usually blow off with speed but a smooth visor with no cracks or nicks can contribute to a clear visor.

Store gear in saddle bags for easy access and unexpected showers or buy more than one set to keep in-home and at work. A few simple preparations and you can navigate a rainy day on a motorcycle with safety. You probably won't get to your destination bone dry but enjoy your ride while you've got it (before the kids come along and you end up in a van!)
