For the sake of baseball, Barry Bonds needs to retire! I grew up watching him with Pittsburgh and then with the Giants. I collected his baseball cards and often tried to trade them for a Frank Thomas or Kirby Puckett card. I didn't respect him then and I don't respect him now. In his early years he was a cocky player always trying to show off with his glove, bat or mouth. Granted, I always knew he was a talented player but his attitude made him someone that I would never consider great. I have tremendous respect for the history of baseball and don't think that I'll ever be able to put him up there with the likes of Babe Ruth and Hank Aaron because of that. To me, the performance enhancing drug controversy was just the icing on the cake for his already blemished career. Now when I watch him play he looks like he's just wallowing in self pity and disinterest for the game. Even a home run looks like it's depressing for him. Maybe he realizes that he messed up his career with his cocky attitude and performance enhancing drug scandals and feels bad about it. Maybe he realizes that no matter what he does or says, there will always be that asterisk by his name in the minds of most. Maybe he's had enough. I know I have. Retire Barry. You got your home run record, now it's time to check out. For the sake of baseball, please retire Barry.
