Computer technology has improved with leaps and bounds. It was not all that long ago when computers were so slow that the average user really saw no benefit from using one. However, that changed in the 1990s and computer technology was changing the way we saw the world and interacted with one another. But what happens when your new high speed computer suddenly loses its speed and leaves you feeling like a throw-back to another era? Well, there are some things that you can do to bring that slow computer back to its former glory, and get you up to speed.
Many people knowledgeable in computer technology would simply recommend hardware upgrades to increase the speed and performance of your pc, and at times this may be the exactly what is called for. However, many times it is a simple matter of maintenance that is needed to solve your computing issues. Remember, when you bought your computer it was fast and efficient, but something caused it to slow down over the course time. Your hardware has not changed; therefore it must be a matter of software.
On a Windows based computer system, over time the Operating System collects a lot of miscellaneous files. Some of these files can be attributed to the automatic windows updates, some are from everyday browsing of the Internet, malware, spyware, viruses, and then there are files left behind by uninstalling programs that you no longer use anymore.
All of these scenarios can dramatically reduce the performance of your pc. The real big issue is how to get rid of these unneeded files. Some of these files are hidden in the system and are not readily found by the average user so that they can be deleted. There are software programs available which can help clean these up, but then you have just downloaded and installed another piece of software.
Luckily, the Windows Operating System comes with some very handy tools you can use to help increase the performance of your computer. The first handy tool is the "Disk Cleanup Utility." This tool is part of the Operating System and it will run through your computer and find unneeded files and then allow you to clean them out. It will also compact files to decrease their size. The shortcut for this utility is located on the "Start Menu," under all "Programs," "Accessories," and "System Tools." You can also just right click the drive you wish to clean. In the menu which pops up, you then click on "Properties" and then the "Tools" tab.
