I started noticing some very odd behavior by one of the kittens when he was barely weaned. Out of seven only three survived and mama wasn't very happy about her lost babies. Her depression deepened until I became worried about the survival of her last three. Tiger, Mufasa and Simba were six weeks old while the puppies were eight and a half, but I figured I'd start them all on softened kibble since things were looking bad. Eventually Mufasa, Simba and the puppies went to their new homes leaving Tiger, his mama, Mack and his mama. Mack and Tiger are seven months and inseparable. They wrestle, play tug, accompany each other on patrol and Mack can always count on Tiger for his protection needs.
At first it was just occasional activities, a nap, shared meal times, a game of tag but as they got older they molded to each other and became "twins". I now have to lock Tiger in the house if Mack and I are going on an extended walk, since the two days Tiger spent MIA. Even though he is still a kitten, Tiger fiercely defends what he considers his. The yard, the street and Mack all fall into this category. Just this morning Tiger got three dogs, the mail lady and two teenagers who cut through the back yard. He is without a doubt the best guard dog I've ever had. The chihuahuas down the street fear this orange tabby to the point where they won't even look at Mack and I as we walk by. Tiger knows several commands; sit, back, find, hide and take 'em. His favorite thing is helping me teach Mack tracking. He'll walk with us to the park and sit patiently waiting while his canine sibling runs off the spare energy. When he finally gets to hear the word "hide" he saunters off with that swagger that only a pleased cat can pull off. He's cat, dog, bait and personal defender all rolled up in a small orange striped body.
