Some days we're just so busy trying to take care of our 'full plate' of responsibilities that we forget to 'give back'. It's so easy to lose sight of occasionally reaching out and helping another person. No matter what stage we're at in our lives each one of us has something to offer via our career experience, educational expertise, skill as an artist, craftsman, writer - the list is infinite because each one of us possesses unique life experiences, skills and knowledge. Why hoard those experiences? Why not share, and try to help someone else as they make their own journey?
I've said this before - and I count my blessings daily - but people in my life reached out to me and helped me both personally and professionally. They listened, offered advice, expertise, structure, and opportunities for me to learn and stretch my mind. I am eternally grateful to one and all - friends, parents, teachers, colleagues, bosses. I understand what I've been given and I try to 'give back' some of what I've learned.
Are you at a stage where you can reach out to someone who is trying to 'make it' in his or her own chosen profession? Why not offer a helping hand? Why not serve as a mentor to a young person in your field. Or participate in a volunteer program to help a young person learn to read. Or volunteer your time helping kids 'stay off the streets and in meaningful activities'. Whatever your interest, whatever your expertise, there is a program out there that could benefit from your time and attention if you're serious, caring and dedicated.
Give it some thought. You could potentially make a huge difference in someone else's life. What better reward is that? You never know, you also might learn something that will help you as you make your own journey toward your dreams. At a minimum, helping someone else will make you feel wonderful and bring a smile to your face. Give it a try. Your kind words, your attention, your nurturing presence could help another person to go out and do great things - things large and small.
