Weelll...I used to work for Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) but I am able to give an unbiased opinion due to the fact that I was not employed by them I was a contract Registered Nurse who worked there through another entity. Therefore I feel that I am able to comment on this subject without prejudice. And I must state that CCA is not U.S. concentration camps.
First of all i must state that CCA ran a tight ship. They were well organized and every member of the staff well rehearsed on their particular responsibilities. This was obvious from day one. I noticed alot and listened enough to understand that if you did not know your job and did not perform well you were gone.
Period.
I also got to know the prisoners pretty well as I was involved with all of them due to the requisite of my job. And I will report here that the majority of the long term inmates did not approve of the job CCA was doing. And why was this? Well apparently the state run prison in Deer Lodge Montana was a little easier on them. they felt they could do more and were treated with more respect. Thes inmates had, oh hell, these prisoners had been transferred from Deer Lodge to Shelby Montana because of budgets and wheezets and whoknowswhysits. And no, not happy campers.
But I will attest they get good medical care including dental and psychological. They have great canteen privileges, cable t.v., education, counseling. The guards were not brutal or abusive in any way. In fact the prisoners were brutal and abusive to each other and the staff.
Some call the CCA the McDonald's or Wal-Mart of prisons but this is not true. I've seen it. They follow the rules. They work hard at a hard job. And I have no dog in this fight. I just 'calls 'em like I see 'em.
I worked there and I can tell you I will never work in prison again. And it was not because of CCA it was because of the prisoners. In a nutshell they were mostly losers who never held a job and chronic complainers who thumb thier nose at authority and create an immense heavy burden on society and possess very few redeeming values that I can recall. And if any one of them can prove me wrong let him take one pace forward.
CCA, in my experience, does a credible job. They are a for profit system but that should not prejudice opinion. They are a quality outfit, highly paid, but in these days necessary.
