The first step to help a friend with a drug addiction, is to get them to admit they have a problem. If they don't see that they are addicted then they will never realise what wrong is coming from it and why they should bother quitting drugs. Getting someone to admit that they have a problem is not easy, sometimes it is the hardest step of the whole process, sometimes it's the easiest, it all depends on the personality of your friend. It really depends on the person in which way you get them to see theres a problem one way that is usually effective is showing them the differences between their life in the past and their life as it is with drugs. Another way is to keep catching them in the act, or challenging them to just quit right away for just a week to prove they arn't addicted.
Once they realise their addicted then you need to talk to them and find a solution with them. Being understanding is a key factor to resolving this whole problem, they need to know that your there to help them and if you at least try to things their way then they will feel like your trying your best. It depends once again on the person on which is a good way for them to quit. Just as if you were quitting smoking ciggarettes there is the patch, nicotine gum and some people just like to just flat out stop. a common way most people think will work is a rehabilitation center. Rehabilition centers can cost a lot of money though and what they don't know is 97% of the people cured, are re-addicted to drugs by the next 5 years. Finding something that will motivate your friend and give him a reason to quit drugs is the best way too cure someone.
Finally and maybe most importantly is that you need to keep cheering that person on and congradulating them. A "good job" or "way to go" every time you see them can make a huge difference, more then you realise. You need to back and cheer your friend on as if they were your favorite sports team in a championship final. You need to always stay positive, rememeber your friend is looking up to you for help and if you don't show any signs of confidence, then he will fold and will just give into the addiction.
