As a Chinese from Malaysia which contain various races, we strive to protect our tradition, thus until now I can still define "Ang Pao"
"Ang Pao" is a red packet filling with money given by the elders to the youngers during Chinese New Year Festival. The word "Ang" refered to "Red", carrying meaning such as prosperity and luck. "Pao" refered to packet. Thus "Ang Pao"="Red Packet"
The "Ang Pao" tradition, in my own opinion, was a sign of chinese culture where every Chinese family emphasize a lot on peace, prosperity and luck. This is due to most chinese in past time live in suffer where wars were deployed and most of them involved in business, thus they were always hoping for luck and peace. There was so much more about "Ang Pao" culture while in here, I only manage to express some of it.
The tradition had to be perform from generation through generation, in fact it was one of the most important elements in Chinese New Year Celebration.Without "Ang Pao", it doesn't feel like New Year and through giving "Ang Pao", the lack of communication between family(where most chinese lack of) can be enhance.
