Making craft projects from recycled goods

Many of the goods we buy and use can be recycled. Craft projects from recycled goods are one great way of ensuring that our limited natural resources are optimally used.

Here are some tips to great craft projects from recycled goods.

Craft Projects from Recycled Paper Goods

Make cute puppets from used and clean take-away paper carriers. Draw or attach facial features and you have a simple puppet. When I was a nave six year old, I was so captivated by the beautiful talking bag my kindergarten teacher had that I always imagined my teacher to be some witch! I did not know what ventriloquists could do back then.

Tissue boxes, fruit and egg cartons make great containers for small items. Cut off the top of boxes, glue on strips of colored paper that are cut out from old magazines or used gift wrappers. Reinforce the edges with good quality tape and you have containers that last you years! My storeroom is cheerfully decorated with boxes wrapped in good quality wrappers and you may think I have not opened my gifts!

When I was in Grade Four, I had a teacher who was nuts over Paper Mache. Through the months with her that year, we churned out masks, trinket baskets, pot mats, tissue boxes and whatever she or we could think of. That was the year I was first introduced to Pinatas! Rumors had it that the good art pieces were sold and the presents that spilled from the piggy Pinata we all had a hand in the making and a swing of the broom at were sponsored from the income!

Craft Projects from Recycled Cloth Goods

Do you sometimes wonder if the popularized holed jeans were really some cast-offs which a tailor has sneakily snipped and neatened more holes into and then sold them to boutiques for a bomb? You are probably wishing you had kept your faded and torn jeans from college days, passed them on to your teenagers and saved yourself a few tens!

Before Barbie dolls were the craze, my resourceful nanny was already reusing cloth from our old clothes to make clothes for our dolls and a matching quilt bag to carry them around! She even made beautiful quilt blankets and carriers for our water bottles out of the cloth!

How do you make good use of an old or torn T-shirt? Make clothes from the T-shirt for dolls, make small cushions or pin cushions and even rag dolls.
