spring or fall equinox, at the rising of the sun, the nine pyramid levels cast a shadow on the staircase edge. This produces an intriguing image of an undulating snake.
Admission: Adults $10
Children Under 12: Free

Tulum

Because of its easy access from the Cancun resorts, Tulum is one of Mexico's most frequently visited sites. Since it is also one of the smaller sites, this is an excellent place to visit if you have younger children with short attention spans. Try to get there before 9:30 AM, when the tour buses arrive. Tulum is another one of Mexico's walled cities. Historians speculate that this might reflex the complex political climate of the times. Some archaeologists believe that Tulum was both a fortress city as well as a religious center. Set against the backdrop of the turquoise waters of the Caribbean, Tulum provides magnificent photo opportunities. Admission is $3, but it's free on Sundays and holidays.

Museum Casa Maya

Also known as the Ecological Park of Cancun, the Mayan Museum is a great place for young kids and for kids at heart. The park has a reproduction of ancient Mayan life, as well as water turtles, spider monkeys and crocodiles. Best of all, admission is free!

A visit to Cancun not only allows you to swim in the waters: You'll come home swimming with knowledge!
