Poetry: Life's journey

My carbon footprint's getting smaller
What exactly does that statement mean?
I asked my seven-year-old daughter,
She said it's all about being green.

My ten-year-old son says he knows too,
They tell us all about it at school!
Remember the stuff you had to do?
The survey about our heating fuel.

The home energy check you filled out,
How much loft insulation we had.
The kids were taking turns to shout out,
Trying to impress their poor old Dad.

Switching off the TV every night,
Because on standby it costs you more.
Use energy saving bulbs for light.
Good seals on all the windows and door.

Walking to school, not going by car.
Solar panels and insulation.
My children should both get a gold star.
They were a mine of information!

I have to say they have got me thinking,
About things I could do every day.
I can't stop polar ice caps sinking,
Well not me on my own anyway!

Following my childrens' example,
It shouldn't be much of a bother.
Wherever my family trample,
Our carbon footprint will get smaller
