and keep it creative by mixing up the menu a little.

Would you child rather have snacks instead of a meal at lunch time? If thats the case why not try a cold-cut plate, with ham, cheese, crackers, and some fruits or veggies. A fruit cup, crackers and cheese and a yogurt would make a great meal for some kids also. It really depends on your child's attitude on what they will take and actually eat for lunch. You don't want to pack a meal that will only find its way into the trash can later at school.

One problem some children find with lunchtime is the actual "time" factor given to them to eat. Some children are slow eater's naturally. If this is the case with your child be sure to pack everything in easy accessible containers so they wont spend all of their time trying to open packages and preparing their meal to eat. This can be frustrating for the child and many parents don't know this is why there child isn't eating their entire meal.

Drinks are just as easy to keep healthy. Some schools are bringing in a no pop policy, especially in the high school's. I don't think this is as much of an issue in elementary schools though. Often children can buy milk at the school for a reasonable price. Another option is juice boxes or bottled water. Juice put into a bottle can also work and be cheaper for the family.

Many schools offer healthy menu items in their cafeterias but this can get expensive especially for the lower income families. As a treat once a week or once a month though, it could be beneficial for you to offer your child money to buy lunch from the cafeteria.

Meal time doesn't have to be a hassle and it does not have to include the same ol' thing. It's very easy to incorporate various meals into lunchtime meals for school...so stay healthy and be creative!
