Tips and tricks for the lazy gardener

Plastic flowers.

No, I'm just kidding. Being that I AM lazy but love gardens, I have mastered the art of lazy gardening. My research was comprised of seeking out old house lots. I mean those old blank spaces on country roads with a driveway and a precarious barn, but no house. What is usually left, in my part of the country (Maine); is lilacs, rose bushes, peonies, and hydrangeas. So with my brilliant deductive reasoning, I figured out if neglect couldn't kill them, then neither could I. The greatest thing about using native species is that they are inexpensive and may even be free if you have a generous friend who won't mind digging for you.

I also like tulips, hyacinth bulbs and crocus because you just plant them once and they come up year after year with no help needed. Just be careful of plants that may not only thrive, but reproduce. Check with your cooperative extension for a list of invasive plants.

To add some color to your garden, add a few annuals in pots. You won't have to weed around them and you can just toss them come the first frost.

So for the easiest way to have a lush garden, figure out what type of plant is indigenous to your area and stick to that type of foliage. If you are so lazy that you don't even want to do that much work, consider a container garden. Grow tomatoes or lemon grass in pots on your deck. You want it even easier, well go back and read the first two words of my article.
