Without a doubt, one of the best Rock songs of all time is the Who's "Won't Be Fooled Again". From the lonely sound of that Hohner organ gradually building up to the smashing of Keith Moon's drums, John Entwisle's bass, Pete Townsend's axe coming down and nailing your eardrums and the primal scream from Roger Daltrey. What a song! This song not only assaults you aurally but the lyrics have a lot to be said for it too. The talk about revolution in the street and changing how things are only to realize that things haven't changed that much at all. A perfect example of this is towards the end of the song "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss." Isn't shaking up things what Rock'n'Roll is all about?
This is one song that proves Keith Moon was a drum god. The way he thrashes about has always me turn it up just to hear his solo parts. Pete Townsend as always turns the guitar up to a new level with his work on this song.
One of the first songs to define Rock is Little Richard's "Tutti Frutti" LR let's it roar with some powerful vocals and pounding piano. Pat Boone's version just missed the point. Rock is rebellion and having a good time. Not nice and mellow as Mr. Boone's version is. LR definitely invites the good time and who cares if the parents don't like it, all the more reason to play it.
As the Who says "Rock is dead they say, long live Rock".
