Recipes: How to use leftover bread crusts

Alone and forsaken, the thin crust of bread lies uneaten in the bread sack waiting to be thrown away. Instead of throwing the bread in the garbage or out to the birds, keep this forlorn piece of food and turn it into something magnificent.

One of the main reasons people don't know what to do with that single crust of bread is that it is simple too small of an amount to use on its own. The key is to have a gallon zipper freezer bag for left over bread crusts. Keep the bag in the freezer and add to it each time there is an odd crust of bread. Before long there will be enough for another fantastic recipe.

1) Cinnamon Croutons. Melt two tablespoons of butter and cut leftover bread crusts into squares. Cut the bread squares with the melted butter in zipper bag and then sprinkle two tablespoons of cinnamon into the bag and shake until coated. Bake for 10 minutes in a 400 degree oven. These will make crisp spicy morsels that taste great with fresh berries and yogurt parfaits, or simply snack on them by the handful.

2)Buttery Noodles. Boil large egg noodles until they are cooked to desired taste. Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a small skillet. Tear one to two bread crusts into small pieces and drop in the melted butter. Toast the bread squares in the pan until browned and slightly crisp. Pour the croutons and and butter over the drained cooked noodles. This makes a great side dish that kids love.

3)Salad Croutons. Cut the bread crusts into squares and sprinkle with 1/2 cup olive oil and then sprinkle with two tablespoons garlic powder and two tablespoons dry basil. Bake at 400 degrees for 5-10 minutes to desire crispness. These make great garnishes for soups and salads as well as just snacking.

4) Pineapple Stuffing. This sounds like an odd combination but it actually makes a great sidedish with ham and is especially popular at holiday time. Mix 1/2 cup butter and 1 cup of sugar. Then mix in 4 eggs and one 20 oz. can of pineapple. Then add 5 crusts of bread that have been cubed. Pour in a greased 9 inch pan and sprinkle the top with a little cinnamon. Bake at 350 degrees for one hour. Allow to set up for a few minutes before serving.

5) Topping for French Onion Soup. Instead of using french bread top French Onion Soup in oven safe dishes with a crust of bread and top with shredded swiss cheese. Pop in the oven until browned. Tastes delicious.

6) Meatballs/meatloaf. The mistake that people make when making meatballs or meatloaf is adding bread crumbs. Breadcrumbs make a dry
