Oh, mountains, definitely. Unless, of course, you like sand crawling up your swimsuit into every available crevice.
I grew up in Arizona with access to the Rocky Mountains and every time I smell pine trees, I am transported back to that wonderful place. Rocks to climb, streams and lakes to swim in, glorious sunny glades and meadows to picnic in and listening to the wind slipping through the pine boughs is about as close to heaven on earth as a person can get.
I remember camping in the Grand Canyon and being so cold that sleep was totally out of the question but watching the sun come up was absolutely worth it. The play of colors across the canyon face is amazing. With the morning breeze you catch whiffs of the dry dusty trail that winds to the bottom of the canyon.
Just a short drive away you are totally immersed in a forest that seems primeval.
I have been in the Ozark Mountains, which are nice but not as majestic as the Rockies, and the Alleghenies which are also fabulous but I have to admit I missed the pine scent.
Being on a mountain side watching the sun slide across the sky, snuggling in a sleeping bag when the temperature dips into the 30s, lounging in front of a campfire or fireplace cozy listening to the rain is just about the best feeling ever.
