"Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep, if I should die, before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take." was the prayer from my childhood which terrorized me. To me, the child, the prayer was setting up my imminent death. I went to bed with the fear that the invisible force would take me away and I would not see my family again.
Does prayer work? I believe that the intention behind prayer works. Most people use prayer as a way to go to the Divine Parent, God, in complaint of a life that they feel is not going they way they want it to. Prayer has the power to give us the confidence to unconsciously shift our life to what we hope it to be.
As is the workings of the unconscious mind, the intention behind prayer works very well. For example, If we are praying for the money to pay our rent or mortgage, because we do not have enough and we are afraid that we will be out in the streets, our fear of not having a roof over our heads and being poor will overshadow our supplications. We will receive what we want, but it will arrive at the last minute and only just enough, barely. Because of this, what we pray for does not always come to us, as we need it, many think prayer does not work.
Prayer does work when we believe that we deserve to have what we want. It is the vocal expression of our supplication to the universe. My mother is a strong believer in prayer. She uses prayer to feel closer to her children when we are away in various parts of the world. She said when she prayed, she would have a dream about us and we would call her the next day.
My prayers no longer cause me terror. I understand and make use of the idea that I am safe. I acknowledge that I have the power to manifest my prayers and that I deserve to have what I am praying for.
